Xiyangguan GB33: Nomenclature, Location, Functions, Indications

Xiyangguan GB33 lies on the lateral side of the knee, in the depression above the lateral epicondyle of the femur, between the femur and tendon of biceps femoris (3 cun above Yanglingquan/GB34).

Nomenclature:

Xi: knee Yang: Yang of yin-yang Guan: joint
Yang here means lateral. Xiyangguan is at the lateral aspect of the knee joint.

English Name/Meaning: Knee Yang Gate
Pinyin: xī yáng guān

Location:

On the lateral side of the knee, in the depression above the lateral epicondyle of the femur, between the femur and tendon of biceps femoris (3 cun above Yanglingquan/GB34).

Functions of Xiyangguan:

  • Dispels wind and cold.
  • Relaxes sinew and invigorates channels.
  • Sedate knee pain.

Indications:

Knee disorders: Pain, redness, swelling, stiffness in the lateral aspect of knee, arthritis of Knee.

Method:

Perpendicular insertion 1 to 2 cun.

Precautions:

Do not apply moxibustion.
